Uterine Cancer: Causes, Symptoms, Types & Treatments

Uterine cancer refers to the development of malignant tumors on the cervix (the neck of the uterus) and/or the endometrium (the lining of the uterus). Although most cases of uterine cancer develop in post-menopausal women, this condition can affect ovulating women of all ages. Explore our articles to learn more about the various types of uterine cancer, as well as the diagnostic and screening process associated with uterine cancer treatment.

Risk Factors
Although the exact causes of uterine cancer remain unknown, risk factors for this condition include obesity and genetic disposition.

Types
While adenocarcinoma refers to uterine cancer that develops on the surface of the uterus, uterine sarcoma describes uterine cancer that affects the inner walls of the uterus.

Diagnosis
Diagnosing uterine cancer generally starts with a gynecologic exam and a pap smear in which abnormal cell growths are detected.

Screening
Because genetics play a large role in the development of uterine cancer, screening those with a family history of this condition is key to early identification.

Treatment
Although treatment options for uterine cancer depend on the location of the malignant cells, common treatments involve radiation and/or surgery.
